I was more than delighted to see that the life size nativity scenes in the parking lot next to our local Wal-Mart made it out for another season. I think it's fair to say that even with all the monster trucks and SUVs, Texas should receive some "green" bonus points for recycling heavily made-up mannequins into Mary, Baby Jesus and co.

Coming home Friday evening, I decided to get off at the stop after mine and take a nice little stroll home, it was a lovely evening after all...and I really should get to know my neighborhood a bit better. To the East of Sunset Park, past the Mexican Groceries and Asian Markets lies Borough Park, a large, flourishing community of Hasidic Jews. Let me tell you, on a Friday night, the streets of their neighborhood are "poppin'." I probably got hit by half a dozen balls, and almost got knocked over by a little slimeball (my Dad's endearing nickname for most pre-pubescent boys) half my size. Groups of adults chatted it up in lounge chairs on their balconies (and I assume were also engaged in some sort of supervision of the little slimeballs....?).

In any case, it all looked like one big party I wanted to be a part of, despite the fact it would require my conversion to Hasidic Judaism not to mention trading in my hoodie and denim cut-offs for a not-so-flattering-dress-like thing. The following morning, I decided to return and document the streets in a very different light, on their Sabbath. Everything looked very much the same, sans people. Like some sort of post-armageddon or mass exile where everything was suddenly dropped and left. Toys in the middle of the street, trash cans knocked over into the street, chairs occupied the evening before, vacant on sidewalks and stoops, strollers chained up like bikes. It is probably one of the only places on a pleasant Saturday morning in NYC where people aren't bustling around.

In honor this weekend's forcasted spring-like weather, I'm posting up some photos from my friend Jen's show last Saturday, Lady Rizo and the Assettes: Birds and Bees. Not knowing what to initially expect, the show surpassed all my expectations and was pretty damn good. Hilarious, dirty, raunchy, beautiful, and classy all in one...yes, somehow it managed to be all of those. Soon I'll post actual shots from the performance, but for now here's a peek of the pre-show action.

Welcome to Miami...

...and welcome to my new blog. I thought it only fitting that I kick it off with some photos from my recent trip to Miami. After all, it was during my stint as a resident there that my appreciation of all things ugly, unusual, and run-down developed. I'm sure there are quite lovelier things to take pictures of...the ocean, palm trees,sweaty bodies scantily clad on the beach, sweaty bodies scantily clad in the club...but in all honesty I prefer the dumpsters and gritty bathrooms. The dirtier the better...probably cleaner than some of those scantily clad bodies with even a touch more personality.
